Xerses and Erin, other JHP staff, and their contractors for installation and electrical work were very skilled, professional, and conscientious. It’s just over a year that JHP installed mini split wall and ceiling units in our home. During one of the hottest summers in Colorado history, we stayed super cool. We used the heat feature as a supplement to our hot water heat system in the winter and the house was uniformly warm and comfortable.  We also had our annual service inspection, and the system was thoroughly checked and cleaned.  Before we chose JHP, we met with several companies to find they were pretty good sales people, but short on technical knowledge and unable to solve a few workarounds that we needed. We chose JHP because they had the tools to right size our units, make helpful suggestions, and genuinely knew the pros and cons of various options.  Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My old furnace was 26 years old. It still worked, but its motherboard was outside of where it was supposed to be. It had been MacGuyvered by the last furnace repairman in 2019, who told me that the warehouse that kept Lennox replacement parts for their older models had been flattened by a tornado, so the older parts were no longer available.

Today, I have a heat pump installed. The outside unit is so quiet that I can barely hear it from the back door, about 15 ft away. The installers just left about 30 minutes ago, and the temperature has already dropped 1°F. Plus heat pumps are far more energy efficient than regular furnaces, gas or electric.

If you're in Denver metro and are looking for this same change up, may I recommend Just Heat Pumps? The company is owned by someone I used to work with at NREL, so I knew they'd be ethical. Their installers were wonderful at wrangling around my five cats, were on time, and worked hard and professionally over the course of the two-day installation.

Our finished basement can be uncomfortably cool and our garage can get really hot in summer.  We did a mini split in both locations.  Did try the basement one last night, so effective and quiet. Xcel Energy currently has the highest heat pump rebate in the Denver metro, with typical residential installations capturing $3,000 to $6,000 or more with a qualifying cold climate LG heat pump system.

Power Ahead

DRCOG and Power Ahead currently have a $1,500 rebate for qualifying cold climate LG heat pump systems if your home is within the DRCOG map area. Check with us to be sure!

CO HPTC

The State of Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit still provides $1,000 towards your heat pump installation. Like the other rebates, we discount this one completely up front for your convenience and affordability.

LG Cold Climate Heat Pump FAQ

We try to answer the most common questions you might have about LG heat pump systems. Check out some of these below, and contact us if we didn’t cover it!

Yes! If you see the LG RED logo or part numbers, it means it’s the latest and greatest cold climate systems from LG. They work efficiently down to -13F to -22F (model-dependent), which is great for Colorado’s climate. They even hold 100% heating capacity down to 5F, where in the Denver Metro area we only reach those temperatures during 1-2% of the year (typically).

And yes! That also includes you all up in the mountains at 7,000 to 10,000+ feet as well.

LG RED equipment costs are usually better than Mitsubishi’s with virtually identical cold climate performance.

In fact, some of the LG RED systems are quieter and perform better than Mitsubishi’s in specific home designs we do around Denver. LG’s ThinQ app is really nice as well, integrating with many other LG appliances that you may already have (washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc).

LG also has more flexibility and control in dialing in the fan control settings and more, allowing customization to maximize efficiency and comfort for your individual home, as all homes are different!

We love both brands and are registered/Pro installers for each, and in general we let our in-home testing and design results help to steer us on which equipment is best-suited for your individual home, all with being mindful of your brand preference as well.

The short answer is maybe. We always recommend a backup heat strip, which can take another 240V 30-60 amp circuit in your electrical panel depending on the exact sizing that you need. On average, we find that maybe 10-20% of the homeowners that we work with need a panel upgrade, or at least a load shedding or load switching device to limit the overall amperage used at once.

We try to help you avoid a panel upgrade and run an electrical load capacity calculation for your as part of our heat pump home evaluation and visit.

We always recommend backup heat strips. There are many good reasons for this:

– Should the heat pump ever not work for any reason (rare), you still at least have a whole-home heat source as a backup.

– Backup heat strips allow for optimal design, because the temperature extremes are only 1-2% of the entire year. Oversizing heat pumps is incredibly common, and with a heat strip installed we can ensure better comfort, lower bills, and a quieter system overall.

– When designed right, you can the peace of mind of having backup, even though it may only come on for a handful of hours per year.

If designed correctly, the answer is no. We run lots of energy calculations here for homeowners who provide their last 12-24 months of bills. Studies and calculations alike show that there is not a significant difference in overall energy/utility bill cost when you switch to an all-electric LG heat pump system, all else being equal.

Altitude can certainly affect heat pump performance, and we account for that. At altitude, you need to run higher airflow to deliver the same amount of heat pump CFM (cubic feet per minute) versus at sea level. This means that special attention and expertise must be applied to heat pump sizing, ductwork sizing, heat load calculations, and much more when we design your Mitsubishi heat pump here in Colorado. So in summary – when designed right, the Mitsubishi systems work very well in Colorado. Even up the mountains.

LG offers whole-home central ducted systems. LG’s KNSLA and KNSAP vertical multi-position air handlers connect directly to your existing supply and return ductwork, fitting right into the footprint of your old gas furnace. We do lots of ductwork modification and (trying to speak honestly) have become experts in airflow, pressure, and balance when switching from older gas technology to new heat pumps, all while integrating your same legacy ductwork in your home.

While a 24V adapter allows Nest or Ecobee connection, we strongly recommend using LG’s native communicating wall controllers or the built-in LG ThinQ® app. Standard 24V thermostats operate like simple on/off switches, disabling the compressor’s ability to micro-modulate. Using LG’s communicating controls ensures the system ramps up and down smoothly, preserving optimal energy efficiency and temperature precision.

In general and as a rule of thumb (and as Xerxes here says): “Smart thermostats make heat pumps dumb”. meaning that if you don’t install the native and engineered thermostat meant to maximize efficiency for that particular heat pump, you’re leaving money and energy on the table.

We include new LG thermostats with every installation so that we can eek out every bit of efficiency from these systems.
