Why Get An Energy Audit Before Installing a Heat Pump?

There are a ton of reasons to get an energy audit (especially before a heat pump installation), but here are some of the most common ones:

You know something’s not quite right, but you can’t pinpoint the issue. The energy bills just seem too high compared to your neighbors, or maybe what you think they should be. This is where an energy audit really starts to narrow in on potential issues.

Comfort is often the most important we care about in our homes. If we’re not feeling good, not much else matters! We first start with a quick overview and discussion to work with you on what exact issues you might be having so that we can work towards solving them.

Every house and every location is built differently. Given so many variables, along with the environmental thermodynamics and other things at play, this can lead to a very uneven temperature and comfort level fluctuation throughout the house. Maybe your home office is very hot during the day, or maybe your master bedroom is freezing at night no matter what you do. An energy audit is where you want to start to diagnose the specific areas in the home. That’s what we do.

It’s not just window and door leakage, but it’s also the material and insulating (or lack of) properties of these openings in the home that can really lead to discomfort and driving up that energy bill. We do a thorough inspection of all the windows and doors to help pinpoint specific and critical issues with windows and doors, including the natural passive solar potential and home orientation to the sun.

A drafty home indicates air leakage, but it’s often deceiving where it’s actually coming from, especially if you have areas or floors do the home. A thorough energy audit, which includes blower door testing, infrared camera inspection, and individual room and area pressurizing testing is the key to minimizing air leakage. When you seal up these leaks, the HVAC system can work less, you’ll be more comfortable, and your energy bill goes down.

When your home is leaky and without proper insulation (among other things), the heating and cooling system has to work overtime. Sometimes, there’s so much heat or cold air infiltration or exfiltration that the system cannot keep up with the constant temperature you set in the home.

The result is that the HVAC system works less, your comfort increases, and your energy bills and maintenance bills go down as well. My old furnace was 26 years old. It still worked, but its motherboard was outside of where it was supposed to be. It had been MacGuyvered by the last furnace repairman in 2019, who told me that the warehouse that kept Lennox replacement parts for their older models had been flattened by a tornado, so the older parts were no longer available. Today, I have a heat pump installed. The outside unit is so quiet that I can barely hear it from the back door, about 15 ft away. The installers just left about 30 minutes ago, and the temperature has already dropped 1°F. Plus heat pumps are far more energy efficient than regular furnaces, gas or electric. If you're in Denver metro and are looking for this same change up, may I recommend Just Heat Pumps? The company is owned by someone I used to work with at NREL, so I knew they'd be ethical. Their installers were wonderful at wrangling around my five cats, were on time, and worked hard and professionally over the course of the two-day installation.

I sensed a high degree of professionalism from the start. Our finished basement can be uncomfortably cool and our garage can get really hot in summer. We did a mini split in both locations. Did try the basement one last night, so effective and quiet. The poured in place pad for the unit outside is impressive. All the people we had contact with were outstanding and all were willing to go out of their way for the customer. Special accolades to our installers Ben/Ryan for an amazing job!

Professional, Affordable, Clean, & Organized! From the very first call to the final walk through of our new heat pump-based HVAC system, I received nothing but excellent communication and service from Just Heat Pumps. I saved THOUSANDS - more than TEN GRAND after qualifying for and stacking incentives and rebates to replace our 43 year old system. Just Heat Pumps made it easy by handling most of the paperwork. The installers (Justin and Kevin) were fast and friendly and the electrician (Evan) was so good that we're hoping he can do some other work for us. They took great care to lay down drop cloths and to clean up after themselves. Not one single piece of trash or even dust was left behind. Tom came by to take some measurements, readings etc to prepare a quote. I was very happy with his work - he is very knowledgeable, friendly and was all round a pleasure to have visit my home. I am looking forward to the quote and would be very comfortable with having him do the work. Update a few months later: I went with JHH for my heat pump, and I am very glad that I did. They did a fantastic job, quoted very competitively, installed a high quality unit, and have been extremely responsive with my questions after the fact. There was a small issue with my electrical circuit (not the unit itself) and the owner came down in the middle of the night at 3f to bring space heaters to keep us comfortable until a fix could be made. I am extremely grateful and would recommend JHH completely.

Just Heat Pumps was really wonderful to work with as we installed a heat pump in our house to replace a gas furnace and AC. Initially, I took out multiple quotes from other recommended HVAC companies but overall I felt like I wasn't getting the time and attention to my home's issues. I had major temperature differentials between the 1st and 2nd floor and air pressure differences in rooms that compounded the issue. It seemed like other companies didn't really take that seriously. I also got multiple different heat pump size recommendations. So I took about 6 months to research the science and by the end of that I finally found Just Heat Pumps with a very scientific and responsive approach. During the first visit, they really spoke about the system in a way that matched my research. The quote they provided was very straightforward and they did not deviate from that original pricing. The installation process was very professional and the folks kept my house nice and clean, with quality installation of the air handler and ducting. Based off the pressure differentials, the installation team came up with a inventive, yet cost effective duct system that allows air to circulate throughout the rooms upstairs without light and sound transfer (to help my baby). They also worked with an electrician that knew his stuff (Ampro) and he set us up nicely, futureproofing our house. Xerxes and team have visited multiple times since installation to check on performance and are very responsive. Plus their website has lots of helpful info on rebates, etc. Overall, Just Heat Pumps was great to work with. Compared to others, their prices seem slightly higher, but I would say that it is a premium well worth it. With performance, the Fujitsu heat pump did well in the recent cold snap. It was also helping in the tail end of the summer with the hot upstairs. The overall comfort of the house is much improved. It will also help us keep our home more protected from poor air quality on the front range. We used to need to open and close windows a lot to get air flow. I would say that using a heat pump has increased our warming electricity costs but brought down our gas usage significantly. I wouldn't say it is saving us money in the winter, just shifting costs to electricity. Overall, we highly recommend them!

They guided us in performing worthwhile upgrades to our home insulation and sealing to optimize the size of heat pump (again, saving money and energy).
